Monique Pelser studied at the Market Photography Workshop (1996) and at Rhodes University where she received a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree (2005), followed by a Master’s degree in Fine Art (2006). Her master’s work earned her the accolade of being named one of Art South Africa’s Bright Young Things. Since 2007, she has lectured in visual art and photography at Rhodes University, the University of the Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University, AAA School of Advertising and the Market Photography Workshop.
In 2009 she was awarded the Tierney Fellowship for photography and in 2012 won a full scholarship to participate in the PhotoGlobal residency programme at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Pelser was one of four South Africans to attend the Goethe Institute African Photographers Portfolio reviews 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2011 she was invited to curate the show Témoin for the Recontres Bamako Biennale, Mali.
