Formed in 1973, Jazzart Dance Theatre is a national cultural asset, a dynamic celebration of South Africa’s phenomenal talent and a leading dance company.  At the cutting edge of contemporary dance, Jazzart Dance Theatre aims to be a transformative contemporary African dance company rooted in a deep and reflective understanding of the world.

The professional dance company creates and mounts world class innovative performances that reflect the ever-changing social environment of South Africa. In addition the training programme provides dance theatre training rooted in a social justice framework.  Jazzart Dance Theatre’s creative process embodies a movement language based on improvisation, a core element of the company’s training methodology manifesting in dynamic choreographic practices. 

Jazzart Dance Theatre has a reputation as South Africa’s most artistically accoladed, innovative and imaginatively conceptualized performing arts company. The Company gracefully and confidently delivers dance, performance, training and creative interventions to South African communities most in need of opportunities to express and free their individual and collective artistic impulses.

Public art has always been part of who we are on this continent and in this country. The interconnectedness of the African “us” has often been impeded however, throwing people apart and far away from each other, creating a physical and psychic separation. Infecting the City is a small attempt at igniting this interconnectedness through artistic expression, making public space public.
