The roots of ballet lie in the art of fencing (sword fighting). The dance form began to develop around 500 years ago in the Renaissance courts of Italy. Early in the twentieth century it became immensely popular around the world. Wherever this highly disciplined dance form finds a base it absorbs the flavour of its new surroundings.

iKapa Dance Theatre is a Contemporary and Neo-Classical dance company formed by Theo Ndindwa and Tanya Arshamian in 2007. Through their outreach programme they have trained several talented dancers.

Their ‘ballet-fusion’ brings an exciting contemporary African edge to ballet. ‘We don’t do boring eighteenth century ballet,’ says Theo, ‘We give it a Now feeling!’
