Infecting the City 2012
The Jewels

Look around you. Cape Town is home to people of dozens of different nationalities, cultures and traditions.

The San and Khoi people have been here for thousands of years. Then, around 350 years ago, colonists from across Europe started arriving, and brought with them enslaved people from Madagascar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mozambique and Angola. Xhosa and Indian people settled here from the nineteenth century onwards, and Far Eastern people after that. And since Democracy in 1994 there has been an influx of men and women from all over Africa. Ours is a truly cosmopolitan City!

Many of these communities have brought with them a broad spectrum of cultural practices: rituals, dances, martial arts or other forms of expression. Gradually, over the years, these cultural forms change, absorbing local flavours.

For the 2011 Festival, ‘The Jewels’ were a collection of short performances that showed the rich variety of Cape Town society. The Festival trawled the depths of the Cape for different forms and styles of performance and put together an intriguing and provocative mix.

To turn them into public art, Infecting The City invited five artists and experienced choreographers or theatre directors to spend several weeks working with different cultural performance forms. These skilled ‘Jewellers’ were Fiona du Plooy, Natalie Fisher, Peter Hayes, Sensei Ndlovu and Celeste Botha.

They were asked to help each of their allotted groups to make a seven-minute performance for a beautifully crafted ‘Jewel Box’ stage.

Five of these Jewels performed every day, each on a different route through the City. Audiences followed the ‘Jewel Routes’ below to find where to Jewel-spot on different days of the Festival, and returned each day to see a different collection of the City’s glorious Jewels.
