Cape Town: a patchwork map of dislocation, where communities are separated by history and inequality, isolated by high walls and indifference. Every community has its boundaries, each interaction its limitations … we live in a state of quiet emergency.
A weeklong experiment, Quiet Emergency blurs the grid of this rigid map and creates a halfway meeting space. Incorporating the marginalised people of our City – street children, sex workers, security guards, street cleaners – and professional performers, this interactive ritual honours that which unites us as human beings, that which gives us connection, hope and continuity.
The following generous funding was provided for the participation of these artists in the ITC residency by:
Pro Helvetia and Art Moves Africa – Gilbert Douglas.
The Victorian Government through Arts Victoria – Margie Mackay.
Dancers kindly provided by:
Sign language translation by Marsanne Selzer
Puppet designed and built by Jason Potgieter and Beren Belknap at UNIMA
Puppeteers: Lusanda Kutta and Sandile Qagana
