Margie Mackay's Biography

Margie Mackay is a Melbourne-based Director, Designer and Performer working in the fields of performance art, visual and ritual theatre. A graduate of The Victorian College of the Arts with a Masters in Theatre Design, and a B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Melbourne, Margie graduated from the John Bolton Theatre School in its inaugural year (1991), and has just embarked on a PhD in ritual performance.

Known for utilising fire, projection, dance, puppetry, music and story Margie's work is diverse and innovative with productions ranging from intimate indoor shows, to exuberant street theatre productions; street art installations and epic scale community ceremonies in Arts Festivals both nationally and internationally.
The main themes of Margie's work centre around explorations of transformation, reconciliation and rites of passage in personal and public celebrations and ceremonies. Much of this work has taken place in outdoor and non-conventional theatre spaces, utilising the aesthetic and artistic possibilities of varied and often challenging sites.
